In the next few years, the next phase of space conquest will begin and astronauts will be deprived of fresh food for many months. This is why research is now under way to develop new methods of breeding, directly on board spacecraft.
A few weeks ago, NASA was successful in breeding lettuce that grew on board the International Space Station. This is a great achievement because it is the first step to creating space hydroponic farms that could produce healthy food for the people of the Earth as well as for participants in future space missions.
Now NASA has taken another step in that direction, and as reported by the media, astronaut Kjell Lindgren has just started experimenting with plant breeding. In particular, the experiment uses the Zinnia flower, and its purpose is to see how the plant can handle microgravity.
During the experiment, flowers will grow in cycles, which will consist of 10 hours of LED lighting and 14 hours of darkness. Naturally, water and nutrients will also be provided, and if the experiment succeeds, the first flowers should bloom in early 2016. By the way, scientists will also test whether colorful flowers will have a positive effect on the morale of astronauts aboard the ISS.
